{"id":1001,"date":"2018-09-12T10:18:17","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T10:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learning.bishops.org.za\/bsu2022\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2025-05-29T14:49:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T12:49:53","slug":"suicide-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/2018\/09\/12\/suicide-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Suicide Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">10 September marks\u00a0<strong>World Suicide Prevention Day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In South Africa there are 23 suicides a day recorded and 230 serious attempts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2018\/09\/suicide.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2816\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2018\/09\/suicide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you or somebody you know experiences or displays the following symptoms, it is important to reach out for help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Withdrawing from social contact and wanting to be left alone<\/li>\n<li>Talking about suicide \u2014 for example, making statements such as &#8220;I wish I weren&#8217;t here anymore&#8221; or &#8220;Things would be better if I wasn&#8217;t here anymore.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Having mood swings, such as being emotionally high one day and deeply discouraged the next<\/li>\n<li>Being preoccupied with death, dying or violence<\/li>\n<li>Feeling trapped or hopeless about a situation<\/li>\n<li>Getting the means to take your own life, such as sourcing weapons or pills<\/li>\n<li>Changing normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns<\/li>\n<li>Doing risky or self-destructive things, such as drinking, using drugs or driving recklessly<\/li>\n<li>Giving away belongings or getting affairs in order when there&#8217;s no other logical explanation for doing this<\/li>\n<li>Saying goodbye to people as if they won&#8217;t be seen again<\/li>\n<li>Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated, particularly when experiencing some of the warning signs listed above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warning signs aren&#8217;t always obvious, and they may vary from person to person. Some people make their intentions clear, while others keep suicidal thoughts and feelings secret.<\/p>\n<p>Looking out for a friend or loved one is an important part of preventing suicide.
