{"id":1647,"date":"2020-08-07T11:48:38","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T09:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learning.bishops.org.za\/bsu2022\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2025-05-28T13:49:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T11:49:30","slug":"raising-a-generation-of-good-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/2020\/08\/07\/raising-a-generation-of-good-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Raising a generation of Good Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we celebrate National Women\u2019s Day this year, let\u2019s take some time as men (or the parents or educators of young men) to do a few things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reflect on what we can do (and continue to do) to develop caring young men.<\/li>\n<li>Support existing initiatives to combat gender inequality and violence against women and children<\/li>\n<li>Challenge ourselves to do more to both raise awareness and make a tangible difference in this area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As a psychologist at the BSU I\u2019m constantly reminded of how vast the internet is and how much there is to learn. Just on <em>Youtube<\/em> alone I want to point people to two videos. Which did you prefer? Perhaps you think we\u2019re preaching to the converted and that the issues are a lot more complex. What I think about when I watch those is this: <em>Why shouldn\u2019t we have frequent reminders to help us as men to be more caring rather than constant reminders about how we as men don\u2019t care, and actively harm women?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2725\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/08\/27654381_2097090190521614_3497850982298027324_n-Copy-300x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/08\/27654381_2097090190521614_3497850982298027324_n-Copy-300x300-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.bishops.org.za\/bsu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2020\/08\/27654381_2097090190521614_3497850982298027324_n-Copy-300x300-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying we shouldn\u2019t acknowledge all the violence and the trauma that men are responsible for. We should remember the Anene Booysens, the Reeva Steenkamps and the Karabo Mokoenas. But as Mr Reeler reminds us, we are in the business of helping to develop good men. Let\u2019s celebrate that goodness. Which is why I\u2019d like to challenge our young men<strong><em> to design a poster on being a good man<\/em>.<\/strong> I\u2019ll personally give R500 to the best entry.
