BISHOPS RUGBY
Latest news
Neatly nestled in the shadow of Table Mountain sits the Piley Rees field, where, for more than a century, Bishops Boys have run diamond shaped support lines, off-loaded in tackles, and attacked defenders, only to subtly slip an early pass to the supporting player coming from depth.
Legendary coaches Piley Rees and Basil Bey realised that Bishops boys were generally less physically developed than their Afrikaans contemporaries at an early age, and subsequently developed a style of rugby focused on speed and skill, rather than brutal physicality. Our unique attitude to the 'running game' is based on the philosophy (also developed through the boy's passion for touch rugby!) that no player is limited by the number on their back.
Hence Bishops having never played with jersey numbers, preferring each and every player to develop a skill set which promotes catch and pass, offloading in the tackle, decision making, and identifying space.
We have U14, U15, U16 and Open sides playing in the incredibly tough Western Province Premier League. Practices are from 15h45 to 17h30 each day, with a captains run on a Friday at 14h30. Matches are played on Saturday mornings with the 1st XV normally kicking off at 12h30 on the Piley Rees.
Vision:
To inspire and unify Bishops through continually striving to improve, and challenge rugby with innovation, but firmly holding onto our heritage of playing a fast paced, highly skilled support based attacking game while being unbending in our defence. All powered by the following core values:
- Love for the game ... Enjoyment and responsible involvement
- Sportsmanship ... Integrity, self-discipline, and utmost respect for opponents and officials
- Excellence ... Always strive to be our best
- Selflessness ... The team and school comes before ourselves
- Fearlessness ... No matter the opposition
- Respect ... For our rugby heritage
